European Union-based textile and apparel companies reported a turnover of €165 billion in 2014, 2.6% more than the year before, according to figures from industry association Euratex.

Exports reached €43 billion –26% of global sales – and the companies employed more than 1.6 million workers.

The role of technical textiles is growing. Manufacturing of non-wovens increased 4.5%, and other technical textiles 2.1%. They represent 37% of textile sales outside the EU and reached 30% of imported textile products.

Euratex president, Serge Piolat, said they would be a key focus for the association in the next few years.

Euratex member federations represent 173,000 companies.
