Adidas extends deal with German national football team

Sportswear manufacturer adidas is to continue sponsoring the German national football team until 2022 after signing a 50 million ($56.7 million) per year deal with the German Football Association (DFB). The new agreement is worth double the previous deal and will be the largest contract for an international team.

According to Reuters, Nike was also in contention to sponsor the reigning world champions but adidas sealed the deal by offering more money and promising to shift production of team merchandise back to Germany. Adidas has sponsored the DFB for over 60 years.

“We are looking forward to continuing our close and trusting cooperation with the DFB," said adidas CEO, Herbert Hainer.

“As part of our long-term strategy, we will increase our production volume in Germany again and plan to also produce the DFB jerseys directly in our home market”, he added.

“I am very pleased that we've managed to extend the contract with Adidas, our partner for decades," said Reinhard Grindel, DFB president. "Adidas is reliable, knows the DFB and is supporting us with upcoming innovations such as the construction of the new DFB academy.”
