Columbia names ‘Directors of Toughness’

01/12/2016
US sportswear brand Columbia has chosen Faith Briggs and Mark Chase as its new Directors of Toughness. They will spend the next nine months testing the brand’s products in the harshest conditions on the planet.

Columbia announced in September that it was looking for two new candidates to take on the role, having also offered the roles in 2015. It received more than 4,000 applicants, with the top group invited to an unconventional interview. They had to scale mountains, hike overnight and kayak just to reach the interview, before facing a range of challenges in Portland, New York, Canada and Scotland.

Columbia said the people it has chosen stood out for their passion for the outdoors. Ms Briggs is an accomplished runner and documentary film maker from New York and Mr Chase is a semi-professional rugby player and a seasoned climber, skier and hiker. He will be the brand’s first international Director of Toughness, joining from the UK.

“The Directors of Toughness are integral employees at Columbia and help showcase the lengths that many of our employees go to in order to test our gear,” said Richelle Luther, Columbia’s chief human resources officer.
