Adidas’ US Speedfactory creates running shoe for streets of NYC

Sportswear manufacturer Adidas has officially begun production at its new Speedfactory facility in Atlanta, US, with a running shoe tailored to the streets of New York City the first shoe off the production line there.

The new facility is adidas’ second Speedfactory, following on from the one it opened in Ansbach, Germany in May 2016. The first shoes created at that location were the Adidas Made for London (AM4LDN), developed to cope with running conditions in the English capital following close consultation with a group of runners in the city.

Adidas has continued this theme in Atlanta with the launch of the AM4NYC (Adidas Made for New York City). The company again worked closely with runners from the target city, who were studied using motion capture technology. They also explained to members of the adidas team what was needed from a running shoe in New York. Among the features this led to were reflective elements to make running at night safer.

The sportswear brand has said it wants to create a total of one million shoes a year from both of its Speedfactories by 2020. It is also aiming to increase the share of products made under what it calls “speed programmes” to at least 50%.
