Adidas brings ocean plastic into its US Speedfactory
24/05/2018
The company announced the launch of the project earlier this year, saying it would design a running shoe specifically for the needs of runners in six key cities around the world. The shoes are being made at its Speedfactory advanced production facilities.
So far, it has released the Adidas Made For London (AM4LDN), which was manufactured at its Speedfactory in Ansbach, Germany, and the Adidas Made for New York City (AM4NYC), which was manufactured at its Speedfactory in Atlanta, US.
The third shoe in the series is the AM4LA, tailored to the streets of Los Angeles, California. The big difference this time is that the model features a 100% recycled upper that contains yarns created from marine plastic intercepted from coastal areas.
Adidas uses this material as part of its partnership with ocean conservation organisation Parley For The Oceans. It has said each pair of AM4LA shoes will prevent the equivalent of 11 plastic bottles from entering the oceans.
Other features of the shoe include engineered ventilation zones, adidas’s Boost midsole cushioning and a digitally bonded sole and upper.
They will be made at adidas’ Atlanta Speedfactory.
Ben Herath, vice president of design for adidas running, said: “The AM4LA shoe demonstrates the potential and flexibility of adidas Speedfactory to evolve and integrate new materials and technology that deliver progress towards solutions to current and new challenges.”
The AM4LA will be available for purchase from May 25. Adidas is hosting an event that it calls the ‘Speedfactory Lab Experience’ in Santa Monica, California to offer the public the chance to find our more about the Speedfactory. They will also have the opportunity to have their running pattern digitally analysed and to test the new shoe.
