The brand has had a relationship with ocean conservation group Parley for the Oceans for a number of years. Adidas upcycles the plastic waste this group collects into a yarn that is then used in the uppers of several of its footwear models. It has also been used in performance apparel for football and tennis.
It has stepped up its production of shoes made from recovered ocean plastic in recent years. After producing one million pairs in 2017 and five million in 2018, it plans to make 11 million pairs this year.
Eric Liedtke, adidas board member responsible for global brands, has said: "Sustainability at adidas goes far beyond recycled plastic. We also continue to improve our environmental performance during the manufacturing of our products. This includes the use of sustainable materials, the reduction of CO2 emissions and waste prevention. In 2018 alone, we saved more than 40 tons of plastic waste in our offices, retail stores, warehouses and distribution centres worldwide and replaced it with more sustainable solutions."
