Adidas confirms ocean plastic shoe target
28/05/2019
In 2018, more than one million runners took part in events in London, New York, Paris, Shanghai and a number of other cities. The initiative is part of adidas’ ongoing relationship with Parley for the Oceans, which sees it upcycle the plastic waste this group collects into a yarn for use in performance footwear and apparel.
Run For The Oceans 2019 will take place from June 8-16. For every kilometre completed, adidas will contribute $1 to the Parley Ocean School initiative (up to the $1.5 million target), which aims to educate the next generation on how to protect the oceans. The next phase of this programme is to launch a youth activist platform to equip schoolchildren with the skills and knowledge to protect the oceans.
Adidas has also confirmed that this year it intends to produce 11 million pairs of shoes from upcycled marine plastic waste. This is more than double the 5 million pairs it made in 2018.
Timed to coincide with the upcoming Run For The Oceans, the brand has introduced Alphabounce + Parley, a new range of sports apparel. It includes a range of products made from at least 75% upcycled plastic waste.
