Parley for the Oceans celebrates 2020 milestones
Non-profit organisation Parley for the Oceans, which cleans plastic waste from waterways, has celebrated milestones reached in 2020 which include signing a quarter of a million volunteers.

The waste plastic is recycled into yarn used by the clothing and footwear industry – adidas has been working with Parley for five years and insulation provider Primaloft launched a Parley waste range in 2019.

Parley said in the past year we have seen “evidence of our planet-warming emissions, plastic-polluting legacy, and warnings of what happens when lose sight of our true role within the ecosystem that allows for our existence”.

However, its founder, Cyrill Gutsch, said in every crisis there is opportunity. “We are more grateful than ever for our growing network and community of partners, collaborators, volunteers and supporters working every day to make a difference. We are also more humbled than ever by the reality of the uphill battle still ahead of us.”

Among milestones reached in 2020 were:

252,983 volunteers have taken part in Parley schemes

The clean-ups have taken place in more than 30 countries

36,180 individuals participated in Parley Education initiatives throughout 2020

Corona x Parley has accomplished over 1,848 clean-ups on coastlines and islands, with 579 clean-ups in 2020.

Parley celebrated five years of working with adidas, which resulted in 1 million pairs of shoes with Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017, 5 million in 2018, 11 million in 2019, and around 15 million in 2020. There are also multiple clothing ranges that use the material.
