PrimaLoft’s new insulation features NASA-developed gel

It is made by combining the company’s synthetic insulation fibres and a silica gel that was developed by NASA for use in aeronautical applications. The material, known as Aerogel, has a highly porous, low-density structure which forms a barrier that blocks out cold and heat.
PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel is said to be very flexible, waterproof and extremely lightweight. Its initial applications will be in footwear and gloves.
The company has highlighted the product’s consistent performance under pressure. According to PrimaLoft, the insulation retains 98% of its original thermal performance, even when compressed by the movement of the hands and feet. It believes this is especially important in footwear.
It is offered in the form of flexible, encapsulated footbeds, insoles, toe caps and glove inserts. They can be tailored to the needs of each brand partner.
For the winter 2018-19 season, PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel will be used in a range of jackets from Helly Hansen, a skiing glove from winter sports specialist Reusch and a hiking shoe from Merrell.
