PrimaLoft seeks to ‘redefine sustainability’ with biodegradable insulation
High-performance insulation materials provider PrimaLoft has officially unveiled PrimaLoft Bio, which it says is the first synthetic insulation made from 100% recycled, biodegradable fibres.

The product has been developed over the past four years by the company’s team of scientists and engineers. It involved two years of research and two years refining the process. More than a year of testing with an independent lab also took place during this period.

In accelerated test conditions simulating a landfill environment, PrimaLoft Bio fibres were found to have reached near complete biodegradation in 394 days, significantly quicker than standard polyester under the same conditions.

This has been achieved thanks to a proprietary technology. PrimaLoft has enhanced the fibres used in the insulation so that they are more attractive to the naturally-occurring microbes found in anaerobic environments, such as those in landfill or the ocean. The microbes eat away at the fibres at a faster rate. The process leaves behind water, methane, carbon dioxide and biomass.

PrimaLoft Bio insulation will only biodegrade when exposed to the microbes in landfills or ocean water, meaning it remains durable throughout the lifecycle of a garment. The process does not affect the performance characteristics of the insulation, or the look or feel of the garment, according to PrimaLoft. It is expected to be available to consumers in fall 2020.

“With PrimaLoft Bio, PrimaLoft is leading the charge by redefining what sustainability really means,” said Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft. “Recycling is a good start but, we are intent on providing an even better answer to the environmental issues facing our industry. As we have been making sustainable products since 2007, PrimaLoft Bio speaks to the heart and soul of who we are. This technology, one of the most significant global technology launches in the company’s history, provides a solution at the material level, which was key for our vision.”
