Puma commits to creating sportswear from plastic bottles

29/03/2019
Sportswear brand Puma is to launch a sportswear collection made from recycled polyester after partnering with an initiative that collects discarded plastic bottles in Haiti, Honduras and Taiwan.

First Mile is a project launched by US organisation Work, sister company of responsible fabric manufacturer Thread. Thread’s material, which is made from recovered plastic bottles, has been used by companies like Timberland.

The collection network operated by these companies includes more than 4,000 people, who collect plastic bottles that could have otherwise polluted streets, canals and landfills sites in under-privileged communities. Local residents gain a source of income by taking part in the collection efforts.

The Puma x First Mile collection, which will consist of shoes and apparel, will be available in stores in 2020.
