Puma sets ambitious target for sustainable material sourcing

Sports brand Puma has said it is aiming for 90% of all the cotton and polyester used in its products to come from more sustainable sources by 2020.

It has set this benchmark after meeting its previous objective of 50% in 2018, two years ahead of schedule. By the end of last year, 50% of the cotton and 66% of the polyester used in its apparel came from sustainable sources.

Puma has said these sources include bluesign-certified polyester and cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative.

In 2018, the sportswear group also reached its target of sourcing 90% of its leather and paper/cardboard from more sustainable sources. This included sourcing leather from tanneries recognised by the Leather Working Group.

Announcing this new target, Puma’s head of corporate sustainability, Stefan Seidel, said: “We are proud that we have reached our targets for more sustainable materials two years earlier than planned. We still have room for improvement, which is why, we have taken steps with our suppliers to sharply increase the amount of more sustainable materials in our products going forward.”
