Brand collaboration will drive 3D progress in sizing, UA says

Garment design and sizing technology company Alvanon has announced a new collaboration with sports brand Under Armour. The two companies have partnered on a project to develop new 3D tools, particularly 3D avatar size sets that Under Armour believes will help it improve the sizing of its garments. The brand has also said that collaboration with rival apparel companies will allow technology of this kind to drive change across the industry.

Alvanon has said 3D virtualisation can help reduce the time and cost of product design and development and minimise physical sampling. Having worked with Under Armour previously to help the brand develop proprietary fits, Alvanon has now built on that work to create a range of digital avatars specifically for the Baltimore-based brand.

This range of avatars replicates Under Armour’s proprietary fits and represents what the technology provider has called “the full spectrum of real bodies” across clothing collections for children, women and men. This involved understanding and defining the nuances and embodying them in the new avatars.

Commenting on the development, Under Armour vice-president, Jami Dunbar, said: “When we fit product on fit forms across the size scale, it does not always follow a mathematical equation of traditional grading. One of the things working in volume allowed us to do is consider a lot of different body shapes. Now we can move confidently in 3D to fit bodies.”

She said 3D is changing the industry, with everyone in clothing retail “starting to touch the technology”. And she added: “The beautiful thing about it is that there’s a great deal of collaboration across brands. Everyone protects their intellectual property, but we all know working together is the way forward.”
