Canada Goose fur-free by end 2022
Outerwear brand Canada Goose recently announced its commitment to “a future without fur”.
The Toronto-based company will cease purchasing fur this year and, following a phasing out period, will not manufacture products using the material beyond the end of 2022.
In a press release, the brand said that its decision was largely motivated by its purpose-driven Humanature philosophy, which combines sustainability with values-based initiatives, as well as its desire to expand its “lifestyle relevance” and continue innovating.
President and chief executive of Canada Goose, Dani Reiss, stated: “Our focus has always been on making products that deliver exceptional quality, protection from the elements and perform the way consumers need them to; this decision transforms how we will continue to do just that.
“We continue to expand across geographies and climates, launching new categories and products designed with intention, purpose and functionality. At the same time, we are accelerating the sustainable evolution of our designs.”
Canadian animal welfare organisation Humane Canada also had comment in the release. Its chief executive, Barbara Cartwright, added: “We applaud Canada Goose’s commitment to end the use of all fur by 2022 and the leadership position they are taking in their industry.”
Interestingly, the brand announced as recently as mid-April that its “ultimate goal” was to end the purchasing of new fur for the creation of Canada Goose products by 2022, but that it would be using reclaimed fur. It launched its Fur Buy Back programme just over two months ago on April 15.
