China: women drove winter sports sales in 2021
Chinese e-commerce firm JD.com, based in Beijing, recently released a winter sports consumption report alongside Economic Daily, a government-controlled newspaper, which suggested that the country’s female consumers’ spending on winter sports rose by 248% year on year in 2021.
Meanwhile, Chinese male shoppers’ winter sports-related consumption levels saw a boost of 181% over the comparative period.
Southern provinces saw an especially sharp rise in winter sports revenues, with Guangxi and Yunnan residents registering an increase of 507% and 426%, respectively. Beijing and Zhejiang reported the first- and second-highest participation levels across winter sporting activities in 2021, according to Jing Daily.
In an earlier report, JD.com noted how this year’s Spring Festival (also known as Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year elsewhere), which coincided with the launch of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, brought about a year-on-year rise in overall turnover of ski-related sporting goods (such as ski trousers and snowboards) of 322%.
Sales of ice sports articles including figure ice skates and sharpeners for speed skates were boosted 553% and 420%, respectively, over the previous year’s figures.
In terms of branded products, sales of Anta’s down jackets climbed 203% year on year during the festivities, whereas turnover of Descente down jackets scored slightly lower, registering a 196% rise year over year.
