Vollebak heads ‘off grid’ with Dyneema shell
UK outdoor brand Vollebak has launched a rain jacket from ultra-lightweight, high-strength Dyneema from Dutch supplier DSM, promoting it as the strongest rain jacket there is.

Highly windproof, tear-resistant and waterproof, the all-purpose shell has giant storage pockets and an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio.

Dyneema was developed to make high-strength sails, and is used to make tents and backpacks.

The jacket part of Vollebak’s Off Grid range, a collection of clothing designed to help consumers live remotely. The company predicts increasingly dramatic weather conditions caused by global warming will affect the way we live in the future, and is creating clothing with this in mind.

Vollebak said: “The Off Grid Shell is not quiet and it’s not soft. This type of Dyneema is noisy. You will wake up the chickens, the dog, the horses and maybe the neighbours. But it is the toughest rain shell you can get. In fact, it’s so tough the material needs breaking in, like you would with a pair of boots. Luckily the more you beat it up the better it will look. And it’s over-geared for a reason. If you’re living off grid and your rain shell is your outer layer, it has to be tough.”
