Almond waste colours Vollebak’s latest collection

UK outdoor brand Vollebak has expanded its natural dye collection with a series of clothes coloured with almond waste.

Since 2019, the brand has “been on a mission to rethink how colour is made” to reduce its reliance on petroleum-based dyes.

It has worked with black algae dye, minerals like hematite and celadonite and naturally occurring pigments found in DNA.

The garments - a hoodie, sweatshirt, sweatpants, sweatshorts, and a t shirt – are submerged in liquified almond shells to create the colour.

The company said: “The upside of the process is that it not only makes every single piece incredibly soft, but it even looks more chilled – when you dunk fully finished pieces of clothing in giant baths of dye, the colour builds up in the stitches and creasing while coming out paler at the edges, just like clothes you've already owned for years.”
