Nature Coatings secures $2.5 million in seed financing
Biochemicals firm Nature Coatings has received $2.45 million in seed funding following a round led by Regeneration VC, The 22 Fund, Safer Made, Portfolia and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
US-based Nature Coatings, founded by chief executive Jane Palmer in 2017, manufactures a 100% bio-based black pigment called BioBlack TX from Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood waste. It contains less than 0.1% volatile organic compounds.
As Ms Palmer told sportstextiles back in May, the product offers sustainably minded brands and retailers a one-for-one, “price competitive” replacement for petroleum-derived carbon blacks.
Partners so far include Vollebak, Kering, Levi’s, AGI Denim and Bestseller-owned brands Jack & Jones and Selected Homme.
“Working in the pigment and dyes industry for over 20 years, I’ve seen the negative impact it has had on our environment and health,” Ms Palmer said of her motivations behind starting up the business. "This inspired me to find a way to develop something better, something that is safe enough to be buried in my vegetable garden.
“At Nature Coatings, our vision is to create a future where the chemical industry operates in harmony with nature and this new investment will take us closer to our goal.”
