Vollebak leans on graphene again

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the material's ‘discovery’ at the University of Manchester. Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov peeled layer after layer off a shaving of graphite until they produced a sample of graphene just one atom thick.
After building a graphene jacket, Vollebak worked with the National Graphene Institute at the University of Manchester for three years to use graphene in a Thermal Camouflage Jacket – a computer-programmable jacket built with hundreds of layers of graphene.
Vollebak said: “In 2024 we’re heading in multiple different directions with graphene. Our first output is the Double Graphene Lightweight Puffer – the world’s first puffer made with a graphene shell and graphene insulation, it’s a highly versatile lightweight puffer jacket that helps regulate your temperature.
“When you’re wearing the puffer in cold weather it helps equalise your skin temperature by sending heat from the hot bits of your body like your head, to the cold bits like your hands. It’s the first wave of conductive fabrics that will carry heat around your body without any power source.”
