Kevlar and Stone Island stretch the rules
Italian men’s apparel brand Stone Island, owned by the Moncler group since 2021, released 100 short fishtail parkas made from DuPont’s high-strength, heat-resistant Kevlar yarn earlier in July.

Part of the clothing brand’s Prototype Research Series, now in its sixth iteration, the limited-edition jackets were developed by Stone Island’s research and experimentation department in tandem with Kevlar’s own consumer brand research and development team.

The result of the partnership is a lace-like all-over pattern which reveals a yellowish core after devoré – or burnout – printing has been applied to double cotton-covered, “stretch broken” fine Kevlar yarn. This process disintegrates the cotton, as Stone Island describes, creating unusual fabric properties and texture, reinforced with a resin treatment.

Prototype Research Series garments are intended to prove not-yet-industrialised technical textile concepts.
