Circ chooses France
As the business community convenes in Versailles today for Choose France, an investor event, US-based textile recycler Circ has announced that it will be building its first industrial scale plant in Saint-Avold, in the northeast of the country. The $500 million project has received backing from the French government and European Union, as revealed by Reuters.

The Saint-Avold site had previously been chosen by Loop Industries and Suez to build a plastics recycling facility that was shelved late last year.

Circ uses a hydrothermal technology to break down polycotton blends into cellulose powder and polyester monomers. The facility could process 70,000 tonnes of textile waste yearly and begin operations in 2028 with a staff of 200.

“We evaluated over 80 sites and visited around 15 of them,” Conor Hartman, Circ COO, told L’Usine nouvelle. “We chose France because it is the world leader in fashion. And above all because of its commitment to solving the sector’s environmental problems. It developed the first Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programme.” Guillaume Thomé, newly appointed general manager for Circ in France, pointed out that France is also the country that “has the most carbon-free energy in Europe. When we position ourselves as champions of recycling, it’s important that the energy we use is carbon-free.”
