Imbotex takes a (very) broad view on recycling
Insulation specialist Imbotex never seems to stop devising new products and solutions to keep fibres in the loop. Exhibiting in the innovation section of Milano Unica earlier this month, the Italian company featured some of its latest developments, notably for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milano and Cortina-d’Ampezzo.

For the Olympics, Imbotex will be supplying thermal insulation to Armani Group’s sports-oriented range, EA7, a brand that it has been working with for years, company owner Stefania Carniello told Sportstextiles.

For Swiss brand Mammut, Imbotex is recycling old climbing ropes into insulation. “The fibres from recycled ropes can make up 50 to 60% of the insulation,” she said. These are blended with recycled polyester fibres to achieve the required performance levels of the outdoor brand.

The recycled denim insulation is made from spinning waste sourced in various Mediterranean manufacturing hubs. “For now, we are focusing on post-industrial waste, but in time we should be able to integrate post-consumer jeans,” she said. Cotton makes up 60 to 80% of the insulation, depending on references, and is supplemented by PLA fibres, from sugarcane, to consolidate the non-woven structure.

“The advantage of denim is that it is everywhere, all brands have denim ranges now,” she noted. Imbotex recycles the fibres using purely mechanical means, without any water, and with minimal waste.
