Patagonia encourages clothes swapping, not buying, on Black Friday

US outdoor brand Patagonia is encouraging customers to swap used gear for new products on Black Friday rather than simply buying new stock.

Partnering with ‘sharing economy’ app Yerdle, in which it has recently invested through its $20 Million & Change fund, the brand says customers can take old gear into participating stores and swap it for something “off the rack” or for Yerdle credits, to use later.

“Recycling is great, but the most responsible option is to get those items that are no longer being used into the hands of someone who will put them back into action.”

According to recycling consultancy WRAP, carbon, waste and water footprints can be reduced by 20-30% by keeping clothing in use just nine extra months. “That’s more impact than any changes Patagonia or any other company could make in fiber choice, production practices, laundering or recycling,” said Patagonia.

On November 28, Patagonia Worn Wear Swap events will be held at US-based stores in Boston, Cardiff, Chicago, Denver, New York City, Portland, San Francisco and Santa Monica.
