Unifi partners with golf tournament to recycle plastic bottles

US-based yarn producer Unifi, which makes Repreve recycled fibre, has signed a multi-year agreement to become the official recycling partner of US professional golf tournament the Wyndham Championship.

This new partnership will see Unifi recycle plastic bottles collected during the tournament. It will place Repreve recycling receptacles around the grounds of the golf course, where spectators will be encouraged to put their bottles.

Repreve staff will also be on hand to demonstrate to spectators how the bottles they choose to recycle are transformed into a sustainable performance fabric. They will also have the opportunity to see some of the products made using Repreve.

“We are proud to partner with the Wyndham Championship to help continue keeping plastic bottles out of landfill and help to further conserve natural resources in the making of Repreve recycled fibres,” said Unifi CEO, Kevin Hall. “What if every one of the 80,000–100,000 people who typically attend the Wyndham Championship recycled their water bottle instead of throwing it away? The positive impact that would have on our local environment would be terrific.”

He added that 100,000 recycled plastic water bottles would make enough Repreve fibre to produce 25,000 hats, 33,000 pairs of jeans or 20,000 pairs of casual pants.

The 2018 Wyndham Championship will take place from August 13-19.
