Busan to lead Korean nylon regeneration efforts
19/05/2022
Promoted by the country’s ministry of trade, industry and energy, alongside the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology, the aim is to form a green fibre ecosystem that keeps resources in circulation, local media said.
Busan has already reportedly invested $9.3 million or 11.9 billion South Korean won in the development of relevant technology and infrastructure, around $4.9 million (6.2 billion South Korean won) of which has been supplied by the state directly.
Bodies including the Korean Institute of Footwear and Leather Technology, textile and chemical company Taekwang Industrial, outdoor brand Kolping and Busan Techno Park, an incubator for local technological innovation, will all participate in the project. Ongoing environmental impact assessments and carbon dioxide emissions reduction initiatives will be considered throughout the four years.
Director of Busan’s bureau of industry and trade, Shin Chang-ho, commented that he expected the city’s efforts would serve as a catalyst for the increased adoption of chemical recycling and regeneration methods when it comes to nylon. Mr Shin added that Busan would now be looking to incentivise appropriate private-sector investment in order to create jobs and “revitalise the local economy”.
