Separating fact from fiction in textile recycling
28/08/2024
“Textiles – The Circularity Challenge” takes place on September 17, 2024, in Brussels.
Its stated goal is to separate fact from fiction in the narrative on post-consumer textile waste, and it focuses on three main topics.
The conference’s first session will discuss the issue of post-consumer textile waste in light of conflicting reports on the impact of exporting used clothing to the Global South. The second session focusses on the evolution of policies, specifically the Waste Shipment Directive and the Waste Framework Directive. A third session will explore what is needed to make textile-to-textile commercially viable.
Key speakers include Alan Wheeler of the British Textile Recycling Association, Mariska Boer of the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC), Martin Böschen of TEXAID and Harsha Vardhan of Syre.
A non-profit based in Brussels and founded in 1948, BIR covers various sectors, including metals, paper, plastics, electric/electronics and textiles. It holds two recycling conferences per year.
