Unifi has announced a new partnership between Repreve, its branded recycled polyester, and CiCLO, a patented additive that is said to enable synthetics to break down naturally in soil and salt water. The technology was developed by Intrinsic Advanced Materials, a joint venture between Parkdale Advanced Materials, Inc. and Intrinsic Textiles Group.

This new offering is designed to help tackle the environmental impact of microplastic fibre pollution from synthetic textile shedding, said Unifi. The additive will be made available in the entire Repreve platform, including Repreve Takeback, which combines recycled PET plastics and polyester textiles, and Repreve Our Ocean, containing ocean-bound plastics.

“This joint initiative integrates two powerful solutions—Repreve and CiCLO technology—to help maximise recycled content while addressing microfibre pollution at the source,” commented Cheryl Smyre, Vice President of Parkdale Advanced Materials.

The new yarns are on show today at the Functional Fabric Fair in Portland.
