Ownership change at AeoniQ
Altri, a wood pulp producer based in Portugal, has announced its intention to acquire a majority stake in AeoniQ, a manmade cellulosic fibre producer spun off from Swiss chemicals company HeiQ. This investment is expected to reinforce AeoniQ’s funds and plans to build-up production capacity.

Altri will be building the first industrial scale facility for AeoniQ at its Caima paper pulp mill, in Constância, northeast of Lisbon. Construction of the 1.750 tonnes-per-year factory is expected to begin next year. HeiQ currently operates a pilot line in Austria.

Production of AeoniQ will benefit from vertical integration, from eucalyptus-based pulp to finished yarn, the company said. The innovative fibre, described as ‘climate-positive’ will later incorporate various other feedstocks, spanning cotton textile waste, agricultural waste and possibly even bacterial cellulose derived from food waste.

Mills cited as having integrated AeoniQ in their ranges are: Riopele, Impetus, Lameirinho, Beste, Feinjersey, Taiana, Dolinschek, Aunde Group, Amann and Strahle + Hess.

“This agreement gives concrete form to Altri’s strategy of moving up the value chain and investing in next-generation materials,” commented Altri CEO José Soares de Pina.

The completion of the acquisition is subject to fulfilment of various closing conditions. The companies expect the process to be completed in Q3.
