Italian textile industry needs new skills programmes

The Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT) held its annual general meeting in Milan on June 12, during which it presented details on the industry’s performance in 2017.

Speaking at the event, ACIMIT president, Alessandro Zucchi revealed that production rose by 8% in 2017 to a value of €2.4 billion. Exports for the year were valued at €2 billion, 7% higher year on year.

Both figures were boosted by strong demand for Italian machinery from abroad, as well as what ACIMIT described as the “crucial recovery” of Italy’s domestic market. It said financial incentives offered by the government to companies to digitalise their manufacturing had contributed to this recovery.

Mr Zucchi said digitalisation was now inevitable for the whole textile industry and called for more partnerships between technology suppliers and textile manufacturers.

He also explained that this process will require workers with a new set of skills and so training programmes must be launched to provide them. ACIMIT plans to work more closely with educational institutions to facilitate this.
