ZDHC accepts Oeko-Tex standard for chemicals conformance

06/09/2017
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Foundation has accepted Oeko-Tex’s Eco Passport programme and ToxServices Full Materials Disclosure programme as indicators of chemical formulations conforming to ZDHC’s Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL).

“We’re pleased to have the two certification standards on board,” said ZDHC executive director Frank Michel. “These new standards will help us tremendously to work towards our goal and support the industry by sourcing safer chemicals.”

The ZDHC’s MRSL covers chemical substances that are limited or banned from intentional use in the production of apparel and footwear materials and trim. Controlling or excluding the use of these substances supports the ZDHC’s mission of removing hazardous chemicals from the apparel and footwear value chain so that they do not harm workers, consumers, or the environment.

To accelerate the global impact of ZDHC’s Roadmap 2020 programme the organisation decided not to start its own certification system for MRSL conformant chemistry but instead to leverage existing certification.

John Frazier, senior technical director for Oeko-Tex in North America, said: “The industry, consumers, governments, and NGOs are asking for safer chemistries to be used in supply chains and that takes a degree of transparency. We help chemical suppliers verify their formulations while safeguarding their intellectual property (recipes).”
