Report slams ‘false solutions’ for meeting climate commitments
18/10/2019
This new report examines the climate commitments of 45 companies, including Salomon, adidas, Hanesbrands, American Eagle, Land’s End, Pentland, Lululemon, Arcteryx, Nike, Mammut, Patagonia, Mountain Equipment Coop, REI, New Balance, Under Armour, ASICS, Burberry, Columbia and VF Corp. It chose companies that have joined the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action or the G7 Fashion Pact.
Of these, according to the report’s findings, only American Eagle is among the “handful of companies” that are “taking meaningful strides” towards a move away from fossil fuels. It goes on to say: “Many other companies are relying on false solutions to meet their climate commitments, easy measures that look good on paper but fail to tackle carbon pollution in the real world.”
Its analysis is that this “handful of companies” have made climate commitments that will contribute to the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping global warming at levels at less than two degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels. The commitments of the rest of the companies “put the world on a path to two degrees Celsius or more of warming”, the organisation has said.
