‘Creativity has surged’: ISPO Textrends 2021 winners
The judges for ISPO Textrends 2021 have said that despite last year’s disruption, creativity wasn’t hampered when it came to textile innovation – it surged.

Assessing new products for autumn-winter 2022-23, they saw a “a clear roadmap to a cleaner tomorrow”.

Bio-synthetic, biodegradable and compostable fabrics are starting to emerge as serious contenders for performance, they said, with higher functionality and new conventional/bio blends, not just confined to textiles and insulation but also in trims and accessories.

Circular economy and zero waste continues to be a focus, with an increase in mono filament fabrics, which make disposal and recycling easier than multi filaments.

Growth in new category Performance Finishes was driven by protective finishes that have addressed antimicrobial demand. Judges noted a huge push in dyeing and finishing, particularly in dope dyeing and eco-friendly chemicals.

More commonly blended with synthetics in the sports sector, natural fibres including cashmere, merino wool and cotton are resurging in pure compositions or natural blends, or with added performance through finishes. “Man-made cellulosic developments are also surging ahead,” said judges. “Paper, abaca, algae and cork are just a few of the new natural ingredients beginning to make a mark.”
