Chinese firm first to license PET recycling tech

20/02/2023
China-based Zhejiang Jianxin Jiaren New Materials has become the first company globally to acquire a licence for use of Repeat’s chemical recycling technology for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyester.

Founded only last month, Repeat is a joint venture set up by Japanese businesses Teijin, JGC and Itochu to pool their relevant expertise. Teijin’s teams are well-versed in dimethyl terephthalate (DMT)-based chemical recycling, whereas JGC is experienced in plant construction and Itochu is known for its diverse supply network.

Zhejiang Jianxin was itself established last year. It shares a parent company with chemical fibre recycler Jiaren New Materials in Shaoxing, which Teijin helped launch in 2012 alongside Jinggong Holding Group.

The licensee will build the technology into plans for a new PET recycling facility, opening in Shaoxing next year.
