Jeanologia launches ‘safer’ laser technology for denim

Spanish denim specialist Jeanologia has launched a new laser technology that it claims can improve workers' health and reduce time to market by four weeks.

Light Scraper is a new optical technology that can create open end denim, ring spun denim, crosshatch or slub by pressing a button. It can replace manual scraping, which Jeanologica describes as “a dangerous technique for workers”.  Manual scraping could be phased out in in two years, it suggested.

Enrique Silla, president of Jeanologia, said: “For the first time we will be able to clone on a standard denim fabric the authentic look of antique denim.

"As part of the jean industry, it is our responsibility to protect the health and safety of thousands of workers, reduce environmental impact and promote innovation. The industry is becoming more professional, leading to the creation of new roles such as technical finishing, laser designers, denim artists and service technicians.”

The company invested than €3 million in the research, which was conducted at its R&D centres in Valencia and Sant Quirze del Vallés. It says time to market, from the start of fabric production to the product arriving in store, could be reduced by four weeks.

Jeanologia’s Environmental Impact Measuring software was recently used by H&M to create its Conscious Denim collection.
