Gore’s ePE membrane reaches the market
Further to technical textiles developer Gore-Tex’s debut of its ePE by Gore material platform last autumn, the first shoes to incorporate the membrane, formed by combining expanded polyethylene (ePE) with polyurethane, have started to hit the shelves.

Brands such as K2, Eider, Kolon Sport and BlackYak have all unveiled designs which feature the technology as part of their current autumn-winter collections, including the latter’s 343 D Eco GTX hiking shoe.

According to BlackYak’s website, the footwear contains recycled content within the laminate and recycled materials at least in part make up both the soles and the uppers. The shoes fasten using Boa’s closure system and include OrthoLite-made insoles created from K-rPET and Innomax yarns. Innomax is supplied by Busan-based manufacturer Seokhwa, which describes the yarn as having excellent antibacterial, deodorising and moisture absorption properties.

Built on a Loop Grip Y9 outsole, the model is non-marking, yet capable of providing a level of traction that is appropriate to outdoor pursuits, the brand adds. It is available in two colourways currently.
