Teijin creates updated rival to fleece
Japan’s Teijin Frontier has launched a polyester material for the outdoor industries that it says is a rival to fleece.
Water diffusion is five times faster than that of general fast-drying materials, according to the company, while heat insulation is three times greater than that of fleece due to its bulky fibre structure. It achieves the pile structure of towelling and offers excellent water absorbency, a soft texture and a bulky-but-lightweight feeling.
The company said: “Fleece, a major synthetic fibre product with a bulky fibre structure, has been used widely for many years because its napping provides excellent heat retention and warmth. The fabric has disadvantages, however, including deteriorating surface appearance and water absorption after repeated washing, and usage limited to fall and winter clothing.”
The company combined technologies from its DELTAPEAK, a material that incorporates yarn texturising, knitting and dyeing techniques, and newly developed textile technologies based on a new false twist yarn.
