Smart textile allows fabric to measure compression

Footfalls and Heartbeats has developed a process for manufacturing smart knitted fabric to measure pressure which allows the fabric to be the sensor.
The first commercial application is in a compression garment that has the ability to measure its own compression.
The company said: “In the future, we plan to do much more. We have also demonstrated the ability to knit optical textiles, generating even more valuable data. Proof of concept has also been achieved for measuring blood oxygen levels, blood pressure capillary refill time (an indicator of healthy blood circulation); and relative humidity.”
We have recently closed our first multi-million dollar commercial licensing agreement with medi, a German medical supplies company, to measure the compression applied by a medical compression garment and it is seeking other licensees to commercialise the pressure-sensing textile technology.
It is targeting Under Armour, Nike and Adidas as potential customers for its athlete gait analysis technology.
“We believe we are on the cusp of a revolution in the design of fabric-based industries such as smart clothes, footwear, bandages and furniture, centred around Footfalls’ proprietary technology,” it added.
