Teijin’s new fibre 'converts sunlight to heat'
20/11/2017
Solotex Thermo absorbs near infrared sunlight and efficiently converts it to heat due to carbon-based inorganic particles mixed into the fibre’s monocular structure, the company has explained.
It adds that it raises the wearer’s wind-chill factor 5? compared to conventional polyester fibre. This has been demonstrated in a sunlight heat-storage test carried out by the Boken Quality Evaluation Institute in Japan, according to the company.
Teijin believes there are a wide range of possible applications for Solotex Thermo, including jeans, pants and bottoms, and outer material. It is currently exploring market opportunities in outerwear and expects sales of the fibre to reach 500 tonnes by the fiscal year ending March 2021.
